Before I give an opinion, I want to be clear about what kind of answer is useful here, since “favorite non-software product” could mean anything from a gadget to a piece of furniture.

For this answer, I will pick the Yeti Rambler, specifically the 20-ounce tumbler, as my favorite non-software product, and my thesis is that its entire value comes from one narrow, boring-sounding engineering decision, double-wall vacuum insulation applied to an everyday object, executed with enough manufacturing consistency that it changed a daily habit millions of people didn’t think needed changing.

Yeti was founded in 2006 in Austin, Texas, by brothers Roy and Ryan Seiders, who grew up fishing and hunting and were frustrated that consumer coolers on the market at the time could not survive the abuse of a boat deck or a truck bed, let alone keep ice for more than a day in Texas heat. Their first products were rotomolded hard coolers built using a manufacturing process borrowed from the kayak industry, priced far above anything in a big-box store, roughly 300 to 400 dollars at a time when a typical cooler cost 30 to 50 dollars. That pricing looked absurd until buyers realized the ice retention claims, multiple days rather than hours, were real and reproducible, not marketing exaggeration.
Yeti extended the same insulation logic into drinkware with the Rambler line, and that is where I actually live with the product daily rather than on occasional trips. Yeti went public on the NYSE under the ticker YETI in 2018, and reported roughly 1.66 billion dollars in revenue in 2023, with drinkware now representing a substantial majority of that revenue, larger than the coolers the company was originally built around. The category Yeti built has since attracted serious competition. Stanley, a brand originally founded in 1913, saw its Quencher tumbler go viral in 2022 through social media, reportedly growing sales by roughly 275 percent that year alone, and Hydro Flask, founded in 2009, was acquired by Helen of Troy in 2016 for roughly 210 million dollars. That competitive intensity is itself part of my argument: an entire industry of well-funded competitors has spent years trying to copy Yeti’s insulation performance at a lower price, and the fact that Yeti still commands a premium says the manufacturing consistency, not just the brand, is real.
Define Goal
The core problem Yeti solved was narrow but real: everyday insulated drinkware, and coolers before it, technically existed for decades, but almost all of it failed at the one job that mattered, keeping contents cold or hot for as long as an actual day requires, consistently, unit after unit. My thesis is that a great physical product’s defining goal is total reliability on one narrow claim, rather than an impressive spec sheet of features that only sometimes work. For Yeti, the goal was making “still cold at the end of the day” true every single time, not just on a good unit off the line. If I were the PM extending the product line today, the north star metric I would choose is 12-month repurchase and gifting rate, defined as the percent of Rambler owners who buy a second Yeti product or give one as a gift within a year of their first purchase, because it captures whether the reliability promise actually converts into the kind of trust that drives word of mouth, not just a single satisfied purchase.
User Segmentation
The Outdoor Professional, 25 to 55, hunts, fishes, or works outdoors, was the original core buyer, values genuine durability under real abuse over aesthetics, and is the least price-sensitive segment because failure has real practical cost.
The Everyday Office and Home User, 22 to 45, uses a Rambler primarily at a desk or in a car, cares about insulation but almost never encounters the extreme conditions the coolers were originally built for, and represents the volume growth Yeti has ridden into a much larger market than hunting and fishing alone.
The Gift Buyer, 30 to 65, buys Yeti products as gifts for holidays or corporate branding, values the premium unboxing feel and recognizable logo as much as the underlying insulation performance.
I would focus on the Everyday Office and Home User, because that segment is what actually took Yeti from a niche outdoor brand to a 1.66 billion dollar public company, proving the underlying engineering claim resonates far beyond the audience it was originally built for.
